A stressful lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits and contact with toxic substances can have a negative impact on our body. Detoxification has become a key concept for restoring health and energy. In this article, we will focus on what detoxification of the body means, what methods exist and how they can be useful. We will also learn which ingredients, including milk thistle, turmeric and ginger, can be effective detoxification aids.

What is it about?

In the modern age of industrial advancement, there is constant pollution. This affects the quality of drinking water and the grown food we eat on a daily basis. Subsequently, it negatively affects our health. The accumulation of these pollutants in the body is linked to diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and chronic respiratory diseases. Therefore, it is important to cleanse the body of these pollutants. (1,2)

How do I cleanse my body?

If a person wants to live a healthier life and cleanse their body of toxins, they can support this process with a number of activities. Limiting alcohol or abstinence has a positive effect on the entire body - the natural detoxification system then works better. Focusing on getting enough sleep, drinking enough water or exercising regularly are other useful activities that can influence detoxification. In terms of diet, it may be helpful to include foods high in antioxidants and probiotics in your diet or limit your intake of sugar, salt and junk food. (7)

Different types of detoxification

In general, there are several ways to cleanse the body. There are widely used methods - diets, menus, etc. But some methods are unhealthy and should be avoided. Others are simple, straightforward and safe. We have compiled a list of the most common methods of detoxifying the body for you. (3)

Existing detoxification methods:

  • Sharper diets: Some people choose to detox by restricting calorie intake or a certain type of food such as juices, smoothies or cleansing diets.
  • Herbal detoxification: Super greens, botanicals such as milk thistle, turmeric and ginger, are known for their detoxifying properties.
  • Organ support: Detoxification methods may include supporting the organs responsible for eliminating toxins, such as the liver, kidneys, and intestines.

Herbs to cleanse and support liver function

Coriander – Very popular in Indian cooking and is used primarily for its large amount of nutrients. Green coriander leaves have health benefits ranging from regulating blood sugar to protecting the liver and kidneys and providing antioxidant protection. It contains vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, iron, zinc, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. (9)

Milk thistle – Originally a Mediterranean plant with red flowers. It contains the active ingredient silymarin, which is extracted from milk thistle seeds. It is responsible for protecting the liver and restoring cells damaged by alcohol and other toxic substances. In addition to the liver, it also supports the function of the kidneys and bladder. (10)

Turmeric – The crushed root is primarily native to India and South Asia. It has antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal effects, as well as very effective anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It is used for better digestion, respiratory problems and liver diseases. In certain amounts, it prevents toxins from alcohol and other harmful substances from damaging the liver. It can also serve as a preventive agent that protects against damage caused by toxins contained in food. (11)

Ginger: Ginger has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, supports digestion and the elimination of toxic substances.

Liver and kidneys

One of the functions of these human organs is natural detoxification. The liver supports metabolism, immunity, vitamin storage and detoxification. They are the most important organ in terms of detoxification. The kidneys are responsible for flushing out excess fluids and harmful substances from the body and maintaining the proper distribution of minerals, salts and water in the body. The proper functioning of the liver and kidneys is important, among other things, for flushing out toxins and harmful substances from the body. Therefore, it is good to focus on them when cleansing the body. One of the proven detoxification aids is milk thistle, for example, which should not be missed with its great properties when detoxifying. (4,5)

"Supporting the liver through a high-quality diet and special nutritional supplements has been shown to promote liver health," says Sam Schleiger. "Common liver detox supplements contain ingredients that have potential health benefits, such as milk thistle, turmeric or artichoke extract." (8)

Conclusion

In short, whether we like it or not, our bodies are exposed to a variety of negative influences. There can be toxins and pollutants in the water, food, or air. Fortunately, we have livers and kidneys, whose natural filtering functions serve to flush these substances out of the body. Sometimes, without our knowledge, these organs may not be functioning 100%. Or we just want to be sure that everything in the body is working as it should. And that is why we can turn to medicinal herbs or herbal supplements for preventive reasons.
